Green Steward Daily Duties

As the Green Steward, you are a department of one that interacts with all other departments. Your job is to understand what they are doing regarding sustainability practices and to support them throughout the production.

So do introduce yourself to everyone, let them know you are on board. Your role is new, so many crew and cast will be unaware that it exists. They will be looking to you for advice and information. Use the Green Screen resources, which has sustainability advice for every department.

If possible, read the call sheet before the 1st day of filming and learn who is who. Always be friendly and polite on set. People will be interested and will want to learn from you. (E.g. what happens to the production's food waste after it's composted?)

Be pro active. Show them that you are well informed, personable and efficient.

And enjoy it!

Any questions or issues, don't hesitate to contact us; office@green-screen.org.uk Or Paul on 07939 540 850.

Daily Duties

Environmental Management System (waste)

1

Help the locations department position Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) bins and pop ups for food waste - or general waste if not composting - on set.

2

Regularly check these recycling stations throughout the day.

3

Ensure there are replacement liners at each bin.

4

If a bin is overflowing, empty and refresh liner.

5

At meal times be near the recycling stations to advise crew and cast.

6

Liaise with the recycling company, understand the pick up schedule.

7

Keep a record of the number of DMR bags so total weight can be calculated.

Water Management

1

If using coolers and water canisters, label a canister for each crew member.

2

Make sure replacement water coolers are ordered and available.

3

Be prepared for crowd shooting days with multiple extras by having recyclable paper cups.

4

Log the number of coolers used during filming.

Departmental checks

Art Department

1

Check if they have any hazardous products; glues, froth packs, etc. If so, please contact Greenshoot.

Catering

1

Monitor the bins at meal times to ensure absolutely no food is put into DMR.

2

Check the caterers have a bin for the food prep waste (either for composting or general waste).

Transport

1

Politely remind all drivers that the production has a no idling policy. If they are cold and need to warm up perhaps try sitting on the dining bus rather than having their engine running.

Legacy

1

Ask all departments, well in advance, if they expect to have any items for donation on wrap.

Catering - food (each day)
Art - scenery flats
Props - furniture, lights, etc
Costume - clothes, shoes
Lighting - gels

2

Once you understand what may be available, research local charities/schools that may be interested, also use the Green Screen donations list.

3

Will the charities collect? If not, how will the items be removed?

4

On wrap, organise the distribution of any assets.

Final essentials for the Green Steward

To complete the programme and qualify the production for certification you must:

1

Green Steward Upload Evidence photos of the environmental measures e.g. water management with coolers and personal canisters, composting bins and the 1st day's call sheet showing the Crew Memo.

2

Download the Wrap Report, complete it and then upload to the Green Steward Upload Evidence section.

Now your production can be audited for final certification. Once awarded it can be used by the agency, client and production company to promote their environmental and charitable achievements.
